Supporting authors on their publishing journey

There’s something uniquely energising about stepping into London Book Fair. For Sabrestorm Stories, it’s a chance to step out from behind the desk and into the heart of the publishing world – a place where stories aren’t just printed on pages, but shared, discussed, and brought to life through conversation.

This year’s fair carried that familiar sense of excitement: a vibrant mix of publishers, authors, agents, and readers, all gathered because they believe in the power of storytelling. For a small independent publisher, it’s both inspiring and affirming – a reminder that even in a crowded marketplace, there is always space for distinctive, original voices.

One of the real highlights was reconnecting with friends – fellow publishers and authors we’ve worked with over the years. These relationships are at the core of what Sabrestorm Stories is about. We’re not just producing books; we’re building creative partnerships rooted in trust, shared vision, and a genuine love of storytelling.

At the same time, there’s always the thrill of discovering new talent. Conversations at the fair have a different quality – spontaneous, personal, and often full of possibility. Hearing an author speak about their work, seeing the passion behind their ideas, is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Every book begins with a voice that wants to be heard – whether it’s a brand-new manuscript or a project already gathering momentum, like our forthcoming novel Deriveville, a striking and imaginative work set in 1980s Paris that has already sparked some exciting conversations.

Naturally, much of the discussion this year touched on the rise of AI. It’s clear that it has a growing role within publishing, and as a tool, it can be genuinely useful – helping with processes, streamlining workflows, and opening up new opportunities.

But being at the London Book Fair also reinforced something we strongly believe at Sabrestorm Stories: tools can support storytelling, but they cannot replace it.

The stories we publish are shaped by human experience – by imagination, memory, curiosity, and emotion. Whether it’s fiction that transports readers to another time or place, or narratives that explore the complexities of real life, what matters most is authenticity. It’s the unique perspective of each author that gives a story its power.

As an independent publisher, our role is to champion those voices – to take the time to work closely with authors, to develop their ideas, and to bring stories into the world that feel real, distinctive, and worth telling.

Leaving the fair, there’s always a mixture of exhaustion and inspiration – along with a bag full of notes, ideas, and far too many catalogues. But more than anything, there’s a renewed sense of purpose.

In a fast-changing publishing landscape, Sabrestorm Stories remains committed to what matters most: discovering and nurturing original voices, building lasting relationships with authors, and publishing stories that connect with readers on a human level.

Because in the end, it’s not just about books. It’s about the people behind them – and the stories only they can tell.
